'Nava' means 'nine' and 'ratri' is made up of 'ra' which also means 'night' and 'tri' meaning the three aspects of our life – body, mind and soul.
 
"Om Ang Haring Kalim Shree Maha Durgay Namah".this is the only mantra of chanting which helps the peoples in NAVARATI to take any thing with Goddess Durga . The festival of Navratri means nights of 9 days of worships ' which also means 'night' and 'tri' meaning the three aspects of our life – body, mind and soul. 
 

The nine days of Navratri are also an opportunity to rejoice in the three primordial qualities that make up the universe. The festival of Navratri is celebrated with prayers and gaiety in the beginning of the Ashwin according to hindi calendar Winter according to English calendar and the beginning of Chatira according to hindi calendar spring according to English calendar .. “Nava-ratri" literally means "nine nights." This festival is observed twice a year, once in the beginning of summer and again at the onset of winter. Navratri is a time where nine forms of Hindu goddesses like are worshiped each day.

These goddess also called Durga, Bhadrakali, Amba or Jagadamba, Annapurna, Sarvamangala, Bhairavi, Chandika Lalita and Bhavani .

The Navratri fast is observed from the first day to the ninth day. Some people spent whole these days with intake milk and fruits during the nine days. Most devotees take a single meal during the day. Non-vegetarian food , onion, garlic & Alcohol food is totally avoided. Many people even they dontworship these days but also avoid the use of onion and garlic for the entire duration of Navaratri. During Navaratri, we invoke the energy aspect of God in the form of the universal mother, commonly referred to as DURGA which literally means the remover of bad things in our life. She is also referred to as DEVI or SHAKTI . It is this energy, which helps God to proceed with the work of creation, preservation and destruction.





PUJA ITEMS 
 
Navratri puja is very simple and not very complicated and even required little bit items like:
 
Photo of Goddess Durga,
Durga Sapthashati book or Durga Chalisa ,
water in Kalash (Mud made is best) ,
fresh washed mango leaves,
one coconut (In which Water is inside) ,
Roli (red color for tilak),
Moli (red sacred thread),
Rice,
Paan leaves,
Supari- beetle nuts
Cloves (Loongs),
Cardamom,
kumkum and
Match Sticks
Dhoop
Deshi Ghee for hawan or for Aarti purpose
Some sweets of Deshi Ghee made or fruits for prasad

POOJA VIDHI of Navrathi
  1. In order to perform the puja, take bath in the morning and wear always Clean clothes both the nine days.
  2. ill the kalash with water and place mango leaves on its mouth
  3. Place a coconut inside the kalash.
  4. Tie moli around the neck of the kalash
  5. Sprinkle 'Ganga jal' all over the Puja room
  6. offer sandalwood powder and some fresh grass to the Goddess. 
  7. Place some fresh flowers in front of the Goddess
  8. offer 'Paan' with a clove placed on it.
  9. Light 'Dhoop '& Diya
  10. Folds your hands & prey.  
  11. Read Durga Sapthashati chapter each day
  12. And at the end read Durga AArti

On the last day of Navrathi
Before they complete their fast, nine young girls and one boy who are considered to be the representatives of each form of the Goddess and Bhairon Nath are invited. They are welcomed by washing their feet and putting tilak on their forehead. Navratri celebrations end on 'Ashtami' instead of Mahanavami in some parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Kashmir and Maharashtra are offered Prasad like poori, kala chana halwa , coconut, or any gift item which small children liked or Rupees. ).

Navratri is a very important and major festival in the western states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka during which the traditional dance of Gujarat called Garba is widely performed. Garba is a Gujarati folk dance celebrated in Navratri a celebration lasting nine nights. This dance form has connection with shakti-puja worships of goddess having powers over all. Its origin is believed to be in the worship of goddess Jagdamba. It is played in a circular from performed by ladies on the nine nights of navratri festivals .Garba songs typically revolve around the subjects of Load Krishna or Laduu Gopal / Nand Lala the nine goddesses. This festival is celebrated with great zeal in North India as well, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and the some state of Punjab.

According to some legends, Vijayadashami or Dusshera is celebrated on the day Lord Ram kills Ravana.. On this day in the in all of the India Ramleela was playing on the grounds where huge peoples of men, women & children are come to see the result of king Ravana, Meghanath, his son, and Kumbhakarna, his brother, stuffed with explosive materials & they were burnt to symbolize the victory of truth over evil.

Navarathri represents a celebration of the Goddess Durga, . Goddess Durga is the mother of the universe and believed to be the power behind the work of creation, preservation, and destruction of the world.  Kali is the most horrific manifestation of Nature. Nature symbolizes beauty, yet it has a horrific form. Acknowledging the duality brings a total acceptance in the mind and puts the mind at ease. The Navarathri festival or "Nine Nights festival"" Though Navratri is celebrated as the victory of good over evil, the actual fight is not between good and evil. From the Vedantic point of view, the victory is of the absolute reality over the apparent duality.

In Hindu mythology the festival is hugely celebrated as the victory Goddess Shakti (Maa Durga) over demon Mahishasura. Mahishasura started killing innocent lives on earth and set out to win the seven lokas after obtaining invincible powers from Lord Shiva. In order to save innocent lives, all the Gods united their supreme powers to create divine warrior goddess, Durga. Maa Durga entered a war with Mahishasura, which extended for nine long days. After fighting hard with him for nine days, she finally killed Mahishasura on the tenth day. There are many incarnations of Durga: Kali, Bhagvati, Bhavani, Ambika, Lalita, Gauri, Kandalini, Java, Rajeswari, et al. Durga incarnated as the united power of all divine beings, who offered her the required physical attributes and weapons to kill the demon "Mahishasur".

The festival of Navratri culminates in Mahanavami. On this day Kanya Puja is performed. Nine young girls representing the nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped. 
 
The holy festival of Navaratri is an amalgamation of various themes, with the common theme of the victory of good over evil.

The significance of Navratri is offering devotion to Goddess Amba (Durga), who is believed to exist in many forms. These Goddesses are believed to be known as "Shakti" ,Significance of the deities pointing the need for deriving solutions to problems and as believed, Durga triumphs over evil, Saraswati rbrings knowledge and Lakshmi brings prosperity.

The first Navratri falls in the month of March-April and are known as Chaitra Navratri. The other are celebrated in the month of October-November and are called Ashwin Navratri.
